Village Thirds win shocker!

by Rick Johansen

The thirds survived a downpour in the second half, as well as a horror show goalkeeping display by Matt Moron (59), to defeat Oldbury at Patchway School in this season opener.

With a strong breeze behind them, Gifford played some half decent football with youngsters ‘Chopper’ Moron and Fraser Venables prominent and it was no surprise when they took the lead.
And it was Venables who made it 2-0 with an excellent shot from distance.
The back four, featuring Big Nigel, Bennett, Joe Chapman and Fraser Moron were rarely troubled and Phil ‘I’m only in the thirds because I am recovering from injury – honest!’ Giles ran the midfield.
As the clouds grew darker, the Gifford scored a third, a far post header from Chopper.
The heavens now opened and Matt Moron decided to give the home team a chance by allowing a high ball to slip in over his head.
Gifford restored their lead but Moron soon made another clanger making it 4-2.
Predictably, the Gifford conceded another goal in injury time but hung on to win 4-3.
Man of the match – Matt Moron, who despite making two absolute howlers, was always entertaining to watch.
