The Village reserves started the new season the way they intend to continue by crashing to a 4-2 home defeat to Ashton Backwell Colts.
The village went a goal down early on but Aaron ‘I can’t be arsed with that training malarkey’ Jones scored with a lucky cross from the right.
Within two minutes, Joe Black made things 2-1 to the village with a brilliant long range strike but somehow Gifford contrived to let in a soft equaliser seconds from the break.
Having played some decent football before the break, the home side reverted to type after it and Moaty and Meaney produced a comedy of errors between them to allow the visitors to go 4-2 up and stay that way.
Arguments followed. Inevitably, Lewis Daniels lost it when Ian Semple tripped over his own feet when trying to cross the ball, shouting that Semple should have crossed the ball.
“That’s what I was trying to do, you fucking idiot!” said Semple.
The visitors back four, the oldest player in which was 17, had little to do in the second period and ran out easy winners.
Ashen-faced first team supremo Martin Black (59) left long before the end, seeing little that could bolster his own squad.
Man of the match – a tough call this. Moaty was in with a shout for standing in the middle of the goal for most of the opposition goals, watching them trickle past him but the HSHM award this week goes to Meaney despite being responsible for most of the goals scored against the village he did manage to head the ball a few times.
The HSHM highlight was a touch of class from Joe Black in the second half when he dipped his shoulder to lose the entire opposition defence only to spoon the ball onto the Speakeasy roof from point blank range.
