The Good Friday Music Shuffle (15.4.22)

by Rick Johansen

As theists commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and then prepare celebrate his resurrection, the rest of us go to the pub, the football or in my case prepare the Friday Music Shuffle. What happens is this. My Apple device, on which nearly all my music is stored, selects at random ten tunes and I tell you what they are. And if you feel in the mood, then click on the song title and sing along.

So, without further ado. let’s rock!

  1. Saturday Night Special by Lynyrd Skynyrd. For those of you who think Skynyrd only sang about Alabama and Freebirds, they really didn’t. This is great.
  2. Dancing Right In Front Of Me by David Gilmour. From the Floyd man’s 2015 album Rattle That Lock, which I bought in Spillers, Cardiff, the morning after seeing Crosby, Stills and Nash at the Motorpoint.
  3. Lay Down Sally by Eric Clapton. The JJ Cale influence is blindingly obvious on this cut from 1977.
  4. Pamela (live) by Toto. From their 35th anniversary tour, this Toto line-up featured the legendary Nathan East on bass and Simon Phillips on drums. Love ’em or hate ’em, these are great musicians. Fact.
  5. Here We Go by Joe Walsh. Opening track of Walsh’s finest album Barnstorm, released in 1972. Essential.
  6. You’re No Good by Linda Ronstadt. Fantastic track from the beautiful Linda’s 1974 album Heart Like A Wheel.
  7. Tony Wilson Said by Badly Drawn Boy. Storming return to peak form, from Damon’s 2020 long player Banana Skin Shoes.
  8. Stars Align by Belly. The always fab alt rockers Belly with a joint from 2018’s Dove album.
  9. Lovely Rita by The Beatles. Classic from Sgt Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band.
  10. Tell It Like It Is by Graham Coxon. Stonking rocker from the Blur man’s excellent 2006 solo album Love Travels At Illegal Speeds.

That’s all, folks. May your God go with you, or not as the case may be.
