The Friday (New Year’s Eve) Musical Shuffle (31.12.21)

by Rick Johansen

I end this year just as I started it, with yet another negative lateral flow test. It will be one of the final tests I shall be taking for a while because none are available. On the other hand, I can also end 2021 with a music shuffle – you know, the one where my musical device selects 10 tunes at random from my collection and I tell you what they are. And if you want to sing along, then just click on the song title.

For the last time this year. let’s rock!

  1. You Need A Mess Of Help To Stand Alone by The Beach Boys. Latter day – well, 1972 – Beach Boys from the Carl and the Passions- So Tough album. This is a belter.
  2. Don’t Blame Them by Cat Stevens/Yusuf. Latter day Cat this time, with a lovely little tune from 2017’s The Laughing Apple.
  3. Ativan by Sufjan Stevens. Another Stevens, this time the brilliant Sufjan from his 2020 long player The Ascension.
  4. A Secret Love by Toto. From 1979’s excellent Hydra, I love this.
  5. Heart Skips A Beat by Olly Murs feat Rizzle Kicks. Yes, really! Lush pop song.
  6. Looking Out For My Love by Neil Young. From 1978’s Comes A Time, a classic Neil tune.
  7. Shot At me by David Crosby. Croz’s late career surge shows no sign of slowing. Brilliant from 2021’s For Free.
  8. Talk To Me by Stevie Nicks. From Stevie’s 2007 compilation Crystal Visions, what a voice.
  9. Black Balloons Reprise by Flying Lotus feat. Denzel Curry. Great track from 2019’s Flamagra, with added Denzel Curry.
  10. From Me To You by The Beatles. The Fab Four’s first UK number one from 1963.

And, as it’s the last shuffle of the year, your magic bonus track is I’ll Be Over You by Toto, which came in as the number eleven tune. Featuring Michael McDonald, this is Toto at their magical best. Just the 62 million you tube views, mind.

Happy New Year! x
