The Friday Music Shuffle (8.7.22)

by Rick Johansen

Welcome to the Friday Music Shuffle. Your opportunity to listen to 10 tracks chosen at random by my portable communication device which just so happens to hold my entire music collection.

Yes, all you need to do is click on the song title and musical heaven (or hell) could be yours.

Let’s rock!

  1. Deepest Blue by Deepest Blue. Yes, Deepest Blue’s classic house from 2003. I bought the album on the basis of this song and the follow-up Give It Away. Big mistake, but this is great.
  2. Career Opportunities by The Clash. Of course, it’s great and it’s from Sandinista.
  3. Library Pictures by The Arctic Monkeys. A belter, obvs, from 2011’s Suck It And See.
  4. Me and Magdelena by The Monkees. This is from their excellent 2016 long player Good Times. Mike Nesmith and Micky Dolenz sing in wonderful harmony and I love it so much. Sleep well Mike.
  5. Milky Way Tonight by Crosby and Nash. Beautiful from the 2004 Crosby Nash LP.
  6. The Boy With The Arab Strap by Belle and Sebastian. I can’t believe this wonderful track was released in 1998. It still sounds as good today as it did then, if not better.
  7. Qomolangma by Public Service Broadcasting. From Inform – Educate – Entertain, this is short and very sweet.
  8. Runnin’ by The Pharcyde. Classic hip-hop from the Labcabincalifornia long player.
  9. My Only True Friend by Gregg Allman. This is from Allman’s posthumous album Southern Blood, released four months after his death in 2017. A very strong record.
  10. Why Do I Keep Counting? by The Killers. Brandon’s band were still on the way up when they released Sam’s Town in 2006 and this is very lovely.

This week’s Desert island Disc from the above is the exciting number six random choice, Me and Magdelena by The Monkees, written by Death Cab for Cutie’s Ben Gibbard. On the short list for my real Desert island Discs which changes every five minutes.

That’s all, folks!
