The Friday Music Shuffle (3.6.22) – Platinum Jubilee Special

by Rick Johansen

Good afternoon and welcome to a special edition of the Friday Music Shuffle to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. 10 songs chosen at random by my music machine (phone). I tell you what it’s chosen and if you wish to celebrate this great day (!) then just click on the song title to sing along.

Her maj is a great fan of the shuffle, so this one’s for you, mam!

  1. Brooklyn (Owes The Charmer Under Me) by Steely Dan. 50 years have passed since the Dan’s brilliant debut album Can’t Buy A Thrill. This features David Palmer and not Donald Fagen on lead vocals.
  2. Ivy Covered house by Ducktails. Lovely jingle jangle guitar music from Matt Mondanile’s popular beat combo outfit, taken from from 2013’s The Flower Lane.
  3. Three Little Girls by JJ Cale and Eric Clapton. 2006’s The Road to Escondido wasn’t a career high point for Cale but this track is pretty good.
  4. Shiny One by Belly. This really is excellent. It’s on 2018’s Dove.
  5. Hey You by Bachman Turner Overdrive. Now we go back to 1975 for this belter from the superb Four Wheel Drive long player.
  6. It Doesn’t Matter by Stephen Stills. Once again we go back 50 years for this fine song the Stills album Manassas.
  7. The Door Into Summer by The Monkees. The excellent Michael Nesmith sings lead on this track from 1967’s Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones Ltd. What a great band they turned out to be.
  8. The Holiday Song by The Pixies. Back in time we go again, this time to 1987. Unmistakably the Pixies, from Come On Pilgrim.
  9. Fox On The Run by The Sweet. The first Sweet single ever written by the band, taken from 1974’s Desolation Boulevard. Absolutely brilliant.
  10. Like A Rolling Stone by Bob Dylan. Incredibly, this is from 1965 and it’s still, well, incredible.

Tough choice for this week’s Desert Island Disc but I’m going to go with Steely Dan’s Brooklyn (Owes The Charmer Under Me) because the band changed the way I feel about music and they’re still my favourite band ever.

Don’t stop and keep rockin, Liz.
