The Friday Music Shuffle (12.5.23)

by Rick Johansen

Hi pop pickers and welcome to yet another Friday Music Shuffle. We’re back to normal after last week’s coronation special so today my music machine will choose ten random songs from my collection and I’ll tell you what it’s chosen. And you can play your part by clicking on the title to listen and even sing along!

So, without further ado, let’s rock!

  1. Shine On Brightly by Procol Harum. Back to 1968 for the title track of, well, Shine On Brightly. Gary Brooker’s voice was one of the greatest in rock.
  2. Sundown by Gordon Lightfoot. Another album title track from the great Gord, who we sadly lost last week. Mint song.
  3. Sometime World by Wishbone Ash. Now we go back a mere 50 years to the band’s greatest album, Argus, for this lush track.
  4. Carry On Wayward Son by Kansas. Coming up to 200 million views on You Tube for this rock classic. Only 47 years old, this belter.
  5. Rule The World by Take That. It’s another classic, innit?
  6. After You’ve Gone by Al Jolson. Yes, I love the bloke. This was recorded in 1949.
  7. Ciel D’encre by Baloji. From the great man’s fantastic 2018 album 137 Avenue Kaniama. You need this record.
  8. Hot Thoughts by Spoon. Yet another title track, this time from 2017’s, well you can fill it in yourself. Great rock band.
  9. Ain’t No Good by Michael McDonald. From Michael’s brilliant 2017 album Wide Open, he’s still the best blue eyed soul singer of them all.
  10. The Only Thing by Sufjan Stevens. Simply magnificent, from Sufjan’s simply magnificent Carrie and Lowell LP. Essential.

This week’s Desert Island Disc was decided early on until Sufjan Stevens’ exciting number ten song The Only Thing came along. The stuff of greatness, especially within the context of the album from which it comes.

That’s all, folks!
