The Big Question

by Rick Johansen

If you would like to read the precise definition of the word stupid, allow me to share with you today’s mind-numbingly dull tweet from June Mummery, one of Nigel Farage’s Brexit Party MEPs:

Just for a moment, have a little think about her words. “The big question now is, who will be here to hold these people to account while they still control Britain’s waters, but the UK has no representation?” Surely, this is not complicated?

No one from Britain will be in the European parliament because people like Ms Mummery don’t want us there. She believed the lie that we would “take back control” by giving up control. June, like millions of other people, has been had.

I suspect, judging from some of her other comments that she really does want to protect our fishing industry. She seems to be sincere about it. Someone has sold her a lie.

The fishing industry is a minuscule part of our economy and its rapid decline in recent years has not been the subject of interest among the hard right politicians who have given us Brexit. Brexit Party owner Nigel Farage was a member of the EU fisheries committee but hardly ever bothered to turn up to represent those fishermen he so dearly loves. At least Ms Mummery does appear to turn up. But only when it’s far too late.

Clearly, Ms Mummery has no sense of irony, otherwise she would not have offered her services to the EU fisheries committee after we have left the EU. Doubtless, the forces of the hard right will be perplexed by those horrible EU bureaucrats denying representation to a committee to someone who has campaigned hard to leave it, but it’s not rocket science, is it?

This is the future for Britain as our country goes through a slow and inevitable decline as we leave Europe. Our tiny fishing industry will almost certainly fade and die, as will our automotive and financial sectors. And clowns like Ms Mummery will seek to apportion blame on everyone except those who caused the rupture in our relationships with Europe in the first place. Don’t let them.
