Punching down

by Rick Johansen

I’ve just about had enough of the repulsive right-wing media and the idiots who consume it. Just last week, the Hate Mail (who else?) ran with this ‘story’:

Then, Talk TV’s half-witted presenter Mike Graham accused the mental health charity MIND of funding the legal fees of asylum seekers. The Mail piece says that anyone who talks about their feelings with colleagues is ‘woke’, which by the way is not a compliment and then Graham tells a flat lie about an organisation that literally saves people’s lives. Is it any wonder that poor mental health in Britain is turning into an epidemic?

Experts, which excludes the gutter media, are united in the view that people talking about their feelings is A Good Thing. It’s not a good thing to bottle stuff up, says the man who almost never talks about his poor mental health and only writes about it. Do as I say, which is to say talk to people you trust if you feel low, not as I do. But don’t expect the forces of evil, like the Mail and anything owned by Rupert Murdoch to have any sympathy.

But, you ask, why criticise the readers and viewers? They’re all lovely people who just have a different point of point of view to you? There’s a simple answer to that: these media outlets know what their readers want to read. While it is clearly true that the right-wing media wants you to be more right-wing, it is also true that they will reflect the views of their readers and viewers. If the Mail and Talk TV get so much as an inkling their readers think, for example, that being mentally ill means you are somehow ‘woke’, you would be naive indeed to assume they wouldn’t pander to them.

If I was A Very Important Person, imagine what the Mail would say about me? A politically correct woke snowflake who opposes racism, sexism, homophobia and – God forbid – writes about how shit he feels: “Pull yourself together, stop feeling sorry for yourself, there are lots of people worse off than you. Oh, and kill asylum seekers now and don’t pay for their legal fees.”

We’ve said it before and it’s worth saying again: don’t buy the gutter press newspapers, don’t watch the far right TV channels who hate you. If we don’t buy the newspapers and we don’t watch the right wing TV channels, who will pay to advertise to no one at all?

I’ve had dealings with MIND and where you come from doesn’t matter to them. A mental person is a mental person to them, asylum seeker or not. If you have feelings which you talk about openly, that doesn’t make you ‘woke’, it makes you a real human being. If you don’t want a full English every day that means you probably don’t fancy a coronary. If you are interested in history, well, yeah? So what?

Just like Dim Dom Raab’s attack on Labour’s Angela Rayner for going to the opera and drinking Champagne, it’s sneering, patronising, class-based bollocks. And in so doing, they are having a pop at those who struggle with mental health. Punching down. That’s not big and it’s not clever.

The media tosh itself doesn’t get be down because I’m far too gone to let it. And it says far more about the inadequacies of those who write this trash than those who are suffering.
