It’s….the Friday Music Shuffle (25.9.20)

by Rick Johansen

As things begin to fall apart, I’m going back into my Man Cave.  And today, live and exclusive from said Man Cave, here are ten tunes chosen at random by my modern day music centre (one for the teenagers, there).

Let’s rock!

  1. Do I Wanna Know by the Arctic Monkeys. The Sheffield chaps from their 2013 long player AM.
  2. Quiero Mas Dinero by Billy Gibbons and the BFGs. A heady blend of rock, rap and Afro-Cuban music from his first solo album Perfectamundo in 2015.
  3. ’95 AKA Make Things Right by Lemon Jelly. From the brilliant ’64-’95 album, some lovely electronica.
  4. It Keeps You Runnin’ by the Doobie Brothers. The Michael McDonald version of the Doobies and it’s still wonderful. McDonald the best blue-eye of them all.
  5. Sonnrise by Sonny J. More than slightly bonkers electronica, here sampling Dylan’s Lay Lady Lay.
  6. I Only Have Eyes For You by Al Jolson. From 1949, the great man does the song that Arthur Garfunkel later took to the top of the charts. Fantastic.
  7. Beautiful Truth by the Proclaimers. The mighty Reid brothers sing an absolutely beauty.
  8. Volk by Thom Yorke. Weirdo instrumental from the Radiohead man’s excellent Suspiria: Music for the Luca Guadagnino film record, probably best listened to as part of the album and not on its own (although I still love it).
  9. Cruel To Be Kind by Nick Lowe. Lowe is, quite rightly, a British national treasure. It should be a criminal offence not to own his Jesus of Cool album.
  10. Dierdre by the Beach Boys. Many Beach Boys fans regard Sunflower as their finest group album. With songs as good as this one, written by Bruce Johnston, it’s not hard to see why.

That’s all, folks!
