B.1.1.529 FRIDAY 17TH DECEMBER 2021

by Rick Johansen

I’ve learned something new today: Covid-19 is nothing more than a cold. This came as a bit of a shock to me since this ‘cold’ has killed upwards of 170,000 people in the UK, including a close family member and some dear friends of mine. Some cold, but stupid people gonna be stupid, right?

I’ve also learned on social media that Professor Chris Whitty, the country’s Chief Medical Officer, has “overstepped the mark” by giving public health advice. Apparently, he should leave this kind of thing to the likes of Boris Johnson who, you may remember, “shook hands with everybody” in a Covid-infested hospital when the virus first broke out. It seems that Michael Gove was right when he said the public “have had enough of experts”.

I find it hard to think straight in the face of such stupidity and ignorance but I’ll do my best. We still don’t know if Omicron is going to be milder than Delta but we do know it’s more transmissible. We don’t know if more people will get very ill, be admitted to hospital and even die because scientists are currently following the evidence. In the meantime, be careful, right? At the very least protect the old and vulnerable, won’t we? Apparently not. Many of us are going to carry on as normal and if older people in our family have to die, then so be it. We have to live with the virus. Oh wait. I mean, if older people who aren’t in our family have to die, then so be it. Thought I’d better clear that up.

As a non-expert in just about everything, I expect the worst and hope for the best. I think that’s a better philosophy than not giving a toss but then I am a bit old fashioned.
