Vaccine Passport

by Rick Johansen

Don’t mention it to anyone who is opposed to the idea of so-called vaccine passports but in a roundabout way the government is about to introduce them. I certainly have major reservations about vaccine passports, but for now that’s bye the bye. Boris Johnson’s slippery government is bringing them in through the backdoor.

The transport secretary Grant Shapps has confirmed that the government is redeploying the main NHS app to show if you have had the vaccine or a test. And they are talking to partners across the world – other countries to you and me – to get the system ‘internationally recognised’. Unless you were born yesterday – and I suggest to you that anyone who thinks Boris Johnson is an honest and truthful politician likely was – this means NHS passport. Because if you cannot prove, via the app, that you have been jabbed or tested, you won’t be able to travel abroad.

Boris Johnson won’t call it a vaccine passport because enough Tory voters and indeed the Tory press won’t let him get away with it. It’s a bit like Johnson telling voters there is no border in the Irish sea when there is. The assumption is we are all stupid and, because we love ‘Boris’, he gets a free pass to do anything he likes.

I’ve had both my jabs so, presumably, my NHS app will be as Pfizer’d up as I am. Maybe my holidays for this year can now go ahead? And given COVID will probably be around forever, what’s to say the vaccine passport won’t be? For people who can’t, or won’t, take a vaccine, they will have to take very expensive tests before and after going abroad, always assuming their destination comes into the green list.

It isn’t a vaccine passport, but it is, really.  if you want to leave the country anytime soon, or even far, better get jabbed up.
