If there is one thing on social media that annoys me more than anything else, it is the totally meaningless inspirational quote. Take this one:
Unstoppable at what, exactly? Being the best footballer in the world? Having a book published? Telling your boss you are so great at your job you want a pay rise and want it now? Yes, believe in yourself, but let’s not be stupid about this. It’s a totally meaningless inspirational quote. But there’s loads more. How about this:
In traditional Facebook style, I can see you nodding along. “That’s SO true!” But it isn’t. It’s bollocks. The moon is over 238,000 miles away. The nearest star is Proxima Centauri which is 4.25 light years from us. If you literally shoot for the moon and miss, it will take 4.25 light years to land on the first star and then what? How about ‘Be the best person you can be. Work hard and do the best you can’ and not that flowery tosh.
The truth is that these totally meaningless inspirational quotes are a lazy alternative to actually thinking about anything yourself. In the end, they are instantly forgettable and will soon be replaced by something as equally vacuous as this:
I don’t need this in my life and more than you do in yours. As Eminem said, ‘You can do anything you set your mind to’ although that’s absolute bollocks, too.
