Too good to be true

by Rick Johansen

At the end of another eventless weekend, I found myself trawling through Facebook to see what was going down, as they say. I found myself directed to a page called Tramore Caravan’s (sic) and Lodges where I learned this:

This March – We are giving away this impressive Willerby Portland Lodge for one lucky family. To participate:
1⃣Share
2⃣Comment: “WIN”
3⃣Like our page
Facebook does not own, endorse or sponsor this competition or business.
Closes March 29th at 9pm!
Blimey, I thought. This is too good to be true. And of course it is.
For one thing, I had no idea where Tramore was so I employed the services of Mr Google and discovered it is in Waterford, Ireland. A little tricky to use on a regular basis for holidays and the advertisement doesn’t make it clear what, if anything, the various site fees may be. Then, I realised that there were no site fees because no such free lodge exists. It’s a scam.
Boris Johnson always insists that he has great faith in the ‘common sense’ of the British people. Why, then, have 85,000 Facebook users shared this post and 46,000 passed comment?
Put simply, this scam is known as like farming. This is how it works. Nobody wins a prize because there is no prize. When you invite your actual friends to join in the ‘fun’, all you do is to invite them to be scammed, too. Most folk will do no more than share the scam, but others, we know, can be sucked in to parting with their hard-earned cash or handing over their credit card details to out and out fraudsters.
Who wouldn’t want something for nothing? My guess is we all would. The trouble is that in the real world, there is no such thing as a free lunch.
Tramore, or the scammers pretending to be Tramore, can’t even spell ‘caravans’ properly, referring instead to ‘caravan’s’. They’re on the make and they are relying on people being – let’s be honest here – greedy and gullible.
Don’t share, comment or like Tramore. There’s no prize, there never is. But if you want to share this blog, please do. I don’t make any money from it but you might stop someone else losing theirs.
