The Saturday Night Music Shuffle (1/10/22)

by Rick Johansen

So, it’s late? So what? I’m sure the many millions of people all around the world who adore this section of the blog (is this right? – ed) were desperate yesterday when the Friday Shuffle failed to turn up. I can only apologise: I was in a Spa Hotel, getting a massage and a pedicure. And running up a three figure bar bill. Anyway…

It’s time for the delayed music shuffle, ten songs chosen from my collection, not by me, but by my musical device. As it’s Saturday, why not click on the title and sing along?

So, let’s rock!

  1. This Time Tomorrow by The Move. A bonus track from the band’s 2007 reissue of 1970’s Shazam. I would never have had a clue this was The Move. The B side of the single Curly, which I love.
  2. I’m In Heaven by Jason Nevins Presents UKNY feat Holly James. Based around a sample of the Toto written Michael Jackson tune Human Nature, this is very lovely.
  3. Thoughts And Prayers by Drive-By Truckers. Stunningly political stuff from this great band’s 2020 stupendously brilliant The Unraveling. They don’t like Trump or guns. “Stick it up your ass with your useless thoughts and prayers.”
  4. I Miss You by Blink 182. It’s a great, great song. I needn’t say more.
  5. Same Old Dog by The Rides. A bonus track that didn’t appear at first on their 2016 LP Pierced Arrow. Stephen Stills can still sing and play the blues.
  6. Hawaiian Sunrise by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Little known but very beautiful song recorded live in 1974, which may have later morphed into Tequila Sunrise, a song that was sung by someone else.
  7. Alpha by Procul Harum. Let’s go back to 1968 for this bluesy belter. Gary Brooker was such a great singer.
  8. A Higher Place by Röyksopp. Lovely tune from the Norwegian electronica duo’s 2001 long player Melody A.M.
  9. Begging You by The Stone Roses. From 1994’s Second Coming, a timely reminder of how great this band was.
  10. Poor Poor Pitiful Me by Warren Zevon. And finally we go back to 1976 and a superb joint from Warren’s eponymous second album.

My Desert Island Disc choice is very tough this week. I’m going for the exciting Number 10 song, Warren Zevon’s Poor Poor Pitiful me. Linda Ronstadt did a great cover of this.

That’s all, folks!
