The Friday Music Shuffle (9.4.21)

by Rick Johansen

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends. 10 tunes chosen by my music machine, at random, and I tell you what they are. And if you want to sing along, just click the title!

Let’s rock!

  1. 4 Chords of the Apocalypse by Julian Casablancas. Fine track from the Strokes’ front man’s 2009 solo record Phrazes For The Young.
  2. Can We All Come Together by Bachman Turner Overdrive. Filler from the the band’s otherwise excellent Freeways album.
  3. Planet Telex by Radiohead. Well, it’s great, isn’t it?
  4. Both Of Us (Bound To Lose) by Stephen Stills. Lovely song from the great man’s 1972 album Manassas.
  5. Every Valley by Public Service Broadcasting. From their brilliant concept 2017 record of the same name, which depicts the decline and fall of the mining industry. Genuinely moving.
  6. Barbers Adagio For Strings by William Orbit. Samuel Barber wrote this, hence the title. I have no idea who he is but this is a gorgeous version by Mr Orbit.
  7. Oh Death by Steve Ellis. As macabre as it sounds, but really worth a listen, as is the album Boom! Bang! Twang! from which this song comes. For older readers, Ellis was the lead singer of 1960s popular beat combo outfit Love Affair. Oh, and this album is a collaboration with the Modfather himself, Mr Weller
  8. Kikwit Town by Michael McDonald. IMHO, McDonald remains the greatest blue eye of them all. This from 2000’s Blue Obsession. It’s all about the1995 Ebola outbreak in Kikwit, D.R. Congo. Very powerful.
  9. (It’s Not War)Just The End Of Love by the Manic Street Preachers. Classic rock from one of the great bands of our age.
  10. Go Out by Blur. 2015’s The Magic Whip is right up there with their best albums. Here’s why.

That’s all, folks!
