The Friday Music Shuffle (8.1.21)

by Rick Johansen

Just over seven weeks of the meteorological winter to go and I’m sheltering in my Man Cave. What, you might ask, am I sheltering from? Well, the slate-grey skies, 2c of coldness and some shitty virus that wants to kill us. Apart from that, everything is hunky dory. So, what else to do on such a winter’s day other than allow my music machine to play ten tunes at random and I tell you what it chose. And if you want to listen along, just click the song title!

Without further ado, let’s rock!

  1. Jackie Blue by the Ozark Mountain Daredevils. From their 1974 album, It’ll Shine When It Shines, this is soft rock at its very best and you will occasionally hear it on Radio 2.
  2. Bed Of Coals by Warren Zevon. The late, great Werewolves of London man, this is from 1980’s Bad Luck Streak in Dancing School and features the Crazy Horse Ben Keith on Pedal Steel.
  3. Runaway by the Corrs. I always fancied the dark haired one – Jim, I think it was. Oh no, it was Andrea. Jim’s an anti-vaxxer these days and all round loon. Lush tune.
  4. Ukiah by the Doobie Brothers. From their excellent 2019 album, Live at the Beacon, this is a tune from their very best album, The Captain and Me.
  5. Riding On A Railroad by James Taylor. From old JT’s finest album, Mud Slide Slim and the Blue Horizon which came out in music’s greatest year, 1971.
  6. Recuerda by James Dean Bradfield. Even In Exile was one of 2020’s best albums and finds the Manics man in top form.
  7. Brain Stew by Green Day. This one comes from 1995’s Insomniac. What a great band they were and still are.
  8. You’ll Be Coming Down by Bruce Springsteen. The Boss from his 2007 long player Magic. So consistently good.
  9. O’Malley’s Break by Rush. Unexpected gentle instrumental from 2011’s Time Machine album, recorded in Cleveland.
  10. Dancing World by Here We Go Magic. Love these indie rockers, this from their 2015 LP Be Small

That’s all, folks!
