The Friday Music Shuffle (6.12.19)

by Rick Johansen

We’re now officially in winter, although it has felt like winter for the last three months or so. As I sit in my Man Cave, I prepare myself for another Music Shuffle from my vast collection of great music (or discordant crap, if you are married to me) and tell you which ten songs have appeared at random.

Here we go, then. Let’s rock!

  1. Do What You Gotta Do by the Four Tops. What could be better to end this week than to listen to the magnificent voice of Levi Stubbs? Literally nothing.
  2. Blues Magic by Santana. In 2016, Carlos got the original band back together to record Santana IV. Great to hear Gregg Rolie on lead vocals again. Although this was the original line-up’s fourth studio album, it was the 28th to carry the Santana name. Bloody good, too.
  3. Midnight Cowboy by John Barry. The lovely harmonica-dominated tune from this great movie.
  4. Come Together by the Internet. The multi musical genre band from their brilliant album Hive Mind. Fab-u-lous.
  5. Arepa 3000 by Los Amigos Invisibles. From their truly great album Arepa 3000 – A Venezuelan Journey Into Space. Everyone should own this record.
  6. Black Magic Woman/Gypsy Queen by Santana. Great cover of Peter Green’s Fleetwood Mac’s tune, sung by Gregg Rolie.
  7. I Wish You Peace by the Eagles. Co-written by Bernie Leadon and Ronald Reagan’s daughter Patti Davis, this is not a career high for the band.
  8. Daylight Again/Find the Cost Of Freedom by Crosby, Stills and Nash. Devastating statement about the real cost of freedom. Genius from Stephen Stills.
  9. For The Love of You by the Isley Brothers. Of course, it’s beautiful, with Ronald Isley in peak vocal form.
  10. Down In Flames by Little Feat. From the Shake Me Up album, this features occasional member Craig Fuller on vocals. Nice.

That’s all, folks!
