The Friday Music Shuffle (6.1.23)

by Rick Johansen

Hi everyone.

Once more, it’s time for the weekly music shuffle. 10 random songs from my collection, chosen by my music machine. If you want to listen or, perish the thought, sing along, then just click on the song title.

Hello 2023, let’s rock!

  1. Helium by Glass Animals. Back to 2020 we go for this lovely song from their album Dreamland. Everyone should buy this record.
  2. Check The Rhime by A Tribe Called Quest. Back to *checks notes* 1991 with this belter from The Low End Theory. I so miss Phife Dawg.
  3. Birth In Reverse by St Vincent. The magnificent Annie Clark on this track from 2014’s album St Vincent.
  4. Baila Esta Ultima by Fonseca. I’m very fond of this Columbian singer and this is a well lush song.
  5. All I Wanna Do by The Beach Boys. Quite beautiful song from The Beach Boys’ best album, 1970’s Sunflower. (Pet Sounds was essentially Brian Wilson, plus musicians.)
  6. Freedom Cry by Deep Forest. Now we head back to 1995 for this lovely song from the Boheme album. Such a unique band, with the music and sounds of the jungle.
  7. You + Me by Public Service Broadcasting. From their fantastic 2017 record Every Valley, which is all about the rise and fall of the Welsh mining industry. Impossibly, heartbreakingly gorgeous.
  8. Guns On The Roof by The Clash. From 1978’s Give ‘Em Enough Rope, which remains my favourite Clash album.
  9. Anna Lee, The Healer by The Beach Boys. This is from 1968’s Friends album. Much more to the Boys than many folk realise.
  10. Lost Dreamers by Mutual Benefit. More shimmering harmonies on this track from their 2016 long player Skip A Sinking Stone. Love this song so much.

Obviously, I am terribly biased, but I thought that was a lovely shuffle this week. My Desert island Disc this week is the exciting number ten tune Lost Dreamers by Mutual Benefit.

That’s all, folks!
