The Friday Music Shuffle (4.6.21)

by Rick Johansen

Summer’s here, the time is right for the Friday Music Shuffle! Yes, it’s here: what you haven’t been waiting for all week. Ten songs played randomly by my musical device and I tell you what they are and if you want to play along – and why would you not? – then click on the song title!

Let’s rock!

  1. Light Flight by Pentangle. Fancy an ear worm for starters? Well, this old folk tune is certainly that!
  2. Spiral Into The Sea by the North Atlantic Explorers. Lush tune from their brilliant album My Father Was A Sailor. My father was a sailor, too
  3. Champion The Underdog by the Sutherland Brothers and Quiver. Desperately underrated merged band from the early 1970s. The Sutherland Brothers wrote ‘Sailing’, which was a big hit for Rod Stewart.
  4. Empty Sky by Bruce Springsteen. Perhaps only The Boss could write a great album about 9/11 and The Rising was it. This is from the album.
  5. Once I Had A Love AKA the Disco Song by Blondie. Basically a grossly inferior version of Heart of Glass.
  6. 99 Days by jo Jo Gunne. From their album Jo Jo Gunne – how original is that? – comes this piano driven rocker.
  7. The Bob (Medley) by Roxy Music. First track side two of their eponymous first (fantastic) album from – get this, mind – 1972. It’s about the Battle of Britain. Listen and you will hear.
  8. My Girls by Animal Collective. Taken from 2009’s Merriweather Post Pavilion, this sing is consistently in my all time top ten tunes. The Beach Boys meet Kraftwerk? I am deeply in love with this song.
  9. Waiting by Harry Nilsson. Lovely old Nilsson tune going back to 1970.
  10. When I Stop Dreaming by Don Henley feat Dolly Parton. Wonderful duet between the Eagle and Ms Parton from Henley’s 2015 countrified LP Cass County.

That’s all, folks!
