The Friday Music Shuffle (4.3.22)

by Rick Johansen

Is there anything to cheer us all up following the Russian invasion of Ukraine? Probably not and certainly not the Friday music shuffle, but it’s pretty well all I have to offer. So let’s do it.

My musical device selects 10 random tunes from my collection and I tell you what they are. And if you want to sing along, just click on the song title.

Let’s rock!

  1. County Fair by Joe Walsh. A lovely start with this cracker from Joe’s 1974 album So What. Great drumming from my friend Joe Vitale.
  2. Once In A Lifetime by Talking Heads. A classic, innit? Tina Weymouth’s bass playing is sublime.
  3. Count It Up by Field Music. One of Britain’s best bands from 2018’s superb Open Here.
  4. Shout To The Top by Style Council. I’m that rarity who prefers Weller’s post Jam music to his Jam music. Especially this. 1984, FFS.
  5. Holiday by Madonna. And this belter from Madge takes us back to 1983.
  6. Rainy Day Women #12 and 35 by Bob Dylan. We go back even further to 1966 where his Royal Bobness advises “everybody must get stoned.”
  7. Love’s Been Good To Me by Frank Sinatra. Old Blue Eyes back in 1969.
  8. Love Love Love by My Morning Jacket. One of the best songs of 2021 from one of the best albums. Absolutely fantastic.
  9. Dirty Blvd by Lou Reed. Great track from 1989’s New York LP. Fun fact: Dion DiMucci sings backing vocals, that’ll be Dion without his Belmonts.
  10. Easy Come, Easy Go by the Sutherland Brothers. The Aberdeenshire brothers with a lovely song from 1979’s When The Night Comes Down. So underrated.

The one song I’d save above all others today: Number eight.

Have a good week ’til next week.
