The Friday Music Shuffle (30.7.21)

by Rick Johansen

Is it that time already, that time of the week when I allow my music device to choose ten random songs from my collection and I tell you what they are? It surely is. And if you want to play along, all you do is click on the song title and sing your heart out.

So, let’s rock!

  1. Sitting In Limbo by Steve Ellis. Yes, the Jimmy Cliff song from 50 years, covered by the former Love Affair lead singer from his 2018 album Boom! Bang! Twang! which was co-produced by the Modfather himself, Paul Weller.
  2. Sowing The Seeds Of Love by Tears For Fears. From their excellent third album The Seeds of Love, released in 1989. Not the most prolific band in terms of releasing music but most of what they produce is terrific.
  3. Fat Mama Blues by Orleans. From their 75 Live At Harvard Square long player, this is rather lovely and mad and bluesy.
  4. Don’t Say You Love Me by Free. Lovely tune from 1970’s Fire and Water, here Paul Rodgers puts down a marker that he’s going to become one of Britain’s greatest rock singers. It’s gorgeous.
  5. Solitude Is Bliss By Tame Impala. Kevin Parker is close to genius IMHO and this cracker from Tame’s first album Innerspeaker suggests I could be right.
  6. Massachusetts by The Bee Gees (live). The brilliant brothers Gibb from their 1997 live album One Night Only.
  7. My Brother Jake by Free. Another belter from Free, once again with Paul Rodgers in tip top form. Released in 1971 which, need I remind you, was the greatest year in rock history.
  8. Rendez Vu by Basement Jaxx. From 1999’s Remedy, this is an absolute cracker.
  9. Bedouin Dress by Fleet Foxes. This comes from 2011’s Helplessness Blues and sees Robin Pecknold and the boys in great form.
  10. Catch My Breath by Confidence Man. Some ace electropop from the Aussie electropop duo’s 2018 debut, and to date only, LP Confident Music For Confident People.

And that’s all, folks!
