The Friday Music Shuffle (30.12.22)

by Rick Johansen

Good afternoon and welcome to my weekly music shuffle, the last for 2022 (you will doubtless be pleased to learn). 10 songs from my collection, chosen at random by my musical device, and should you have too much time on your hands, why not click on the song title to sing along?

Anyway, for the last time this year, let’s rock!

  1. Teenage Kicks by Nouvelle Vague. If you’re going to make a cover version of a great song, which this is, then why not do something totally different and rather lovely?
  2. Click Click by The Beat. Vintage Beat here.
  3. God Is A DJ by Faithless. A reminder of what we have lost with the death of Maxi Jazz.
  4. Paranoid Android by Radiohead. From 1997’s brilliant OK Computer. “When I am king you will be first against the wall.” Quite.
  5. Magic Moments by Pagliaro. Very old folk, like me, may remember Pag’s 1971 hit Lovin’ You Ain’t Easy. Well, it came from an excellent album called Pagliaro, which you should all buy. Love the bloke.
  6. (It’s Not war) Just The End Of Love) by Manic Street Preachers. Always brilliant, this belter comes from 2010’s Postcards From A Young Man.
  7. Testify by Kamasi Washington. Wonderful jazzy belter from 2018’s Heaven And Earth long player.
  8. Fog On The Tyne by Lindisfarne. Back to 1971 and the best year ever for music, here’s a cracker from Newcastle’s finest (ever).
  9. In My Arms by Kylie Minogue. The ageless Kylie with more top notch pop.
  10. To The Last Whale (a) Critical Mass (b) Wind On The Water by David Crosby and Graham Nash. Heartbreakingly beautiful song about the destruction of the whale population. Listen to those words.

My Desert Island Disc for this week is the exciting number ten song To The Last Whale (a) Critical mass (b) Wind On The Water by Crosby and Nash.

That’s all, folks!
