The Friday Music Shuffle (30/10/20)

by Rick Johansen

In the depths of deepest winter – well, almost – it’s time to listen to the music. And what music. It’s the Friday Music Shuffle where my device plays ten songs from my collection in random order and I tell you what they are.

So, without further ado, let’s rock! (CLICK TO LISTEN TO EACH TRACK)

  1. Soul Brother by Todd Rundgren. Todd’s 2004 album Liars is up there with his best work. This jazzy gem is from that record.
  2. You Stole The Sun From My Heart by Manic Street Preachers. A great tune from the mighty Manics.
  3. Samurai by Crosby and Nash. Lush acapella from C&N.
  4. What It Means by Drive-By Truckers. From their 2016 highly political, anti-racist album American Band. This is great countryish rock.
  5. Save Some (For Me) by John Martyn. This gem is a bonus ‘live’ track from his excellent Grace and Danger long player.
  6. Don’t Mess Me Up by the Move. Roy Wood’s (and Jeff Lynne’s, if you ask me) finest hour, which is their Message From The Country album. This is an Elvis spoof tribute. 1971, obviously. Rock’s greatest year.
  7. Hello Hooray by Alice Cooper. Although Alice had peaked by 1973, he was still making some fine music. This, from Billion Dollar Babies, is very fine indeed.
  8. God Only Knows by the Beach Boys. Perfection.
  9. The Boy With The Arab Strap by Belle and Sebastian. I just love this from the great Scots.
  10. Runaway by the Sensational Alex Harvey Band. A very different Scot in this bonkers cover of the Del Shannon classic.

That’s all, folks.
