The Friday Music Shuffle (27.11.20)

by Rick Johansen

And now it’s time for a little music, ten tunes chosen at random by my music system and not only do I tell you what they are, you can click the song title and listen to it yourself. How exciting is that?

Anyway, without further ado, let’s rock!

  1. Belly Bongo by Sonny J. Lovely little tune from the Scouse producer’s only album, 2008’s excellent Disastro.
  2. Can You Dig It? by the Mock Turtles. One of the greatest singles of all time IMHO, featuring Martin Coogan whose famous brother is…a-ha!
  3. How Do You Sleep? by John Lennon. Lennon takes a swipe at Macca in this belter from his Imagine album, with some lovely slide guitar from George Harrison.
  4. Baby Please Don’t Go by Billy Gibbons and the BFGs. The ZZ Top man with a cover of an ancient blues classic, from 2015s Perfectamundo.
  5. Both Sides Now by Judy Collins. A rare instance of a cover being better than the original. Sorry to Joni Mitchell who wrote it, but it’s true. From 1969, mind.
  6. Interlude (Loving the People) by Michael Kiwanuka. This tune, from 2019’s Kiwanuka album, which everyone should own, is based around a speech by the great civil rights leader John Robert Lewis, who sadly died this year.
  7. Tuesday’s Gone by Lynyrd Skynyrd. This is track two on the band’s first album ‘Pronounced ‘Lĕh-‘nérd ‘Skin-‘nérd’ from 1973. I was so lucky to see them on their first tour of the UK.
  8. Open All Night by Bruce Springsteen. 12 bar rocker featuring only the Boss from his otherwise bleak but brilliant 1982 album Nebraska.
  9. Lose This Skin by the Clash. From 1980’s epic Sandinista, featuring the fiddle and voice of long standing Strummer collaborator Tymon Dogg.
  10. Teenage Nervous Breakdown by Little Feat. Classic rocker from the Feat’s 1972 album Sailin’ Shoes.

That’s all, folks.
