The Friday Music Shuffle (26.8.22)

by Rick Johansen

Imagine going all the way to Cardiff to tour the record stores and then coming back having bought nothing? That was my life today, so now I am going to cheer myself up by pressing the magic button on my music machine and allowing it to play 10 songs from my collection in random order. Along the way, I’ll tell you what the songs were and offer you the once in a lifetime opportunity to sing along by clicking on the title of each one!

So without further ado, let’s rock!

  1. Love, Peace, Happiness by the Isley Brothers and Santana. Apart from the first bit sounding like the theme from The Sweeney, this is an excellent track from 2017’s Power of Peace long player.
  2. The Night We called It A Day by Bob Dylan. From Bob’s fine Shadows In The Night long player in 2015. The song was Frank Sinatra’s very first recording in 1942.
  3. Original by Leftfield. From 1995’s magnificent Leftism – so, so good.
  4. A Thing Or Two by The Beach Boys. A rocker from 1967’s Wild Honey and a clear indication of where the band was going, post the cars and girls songs era.
  5. I Remember You by Frank Ifield. Back to 1962 for some yodelling from our Frank.
  6. Forty Four Blues/How Many More Years by Little Feat. Great cover of the Howlin’ Wolf classic, featuring Ry Cooder on slide guitar.
  7. Rush Minute by Massive Attack. Hard to express just how much I love 2010’s Heligoland, from which this gem hails.
  8. Race Among The Ruins by Gordon Lightfoot. Opening track from Lightfoot’s 1976 LP Summertime Dream. The next track is The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
  9. Mr Spaceman by The Byrds. Back to 1966 and a track the band’s Fifth Dimension long player.
  10. Going Underground by The Jam. Weller gets stuck into the Conservatives in this all time classic from…gulp…1980.

Quite the eclectic randomly generated mix there. My desert island disc, in a photo-finish, is Original by Leftfield.

That’s all, folks!
