The Friday Music Shuffle 24/3

by Rick Johansen

It’s Friday, I’ve got an hour to kill until I go to the pub so there’s just enough tome to bore you rigid with some self-indulgence as the iPod goes to play at random, amplying its contents though the man cave.

Welcome my friends to the show that never ends.

It’s the Friday music shuffle!

1. God Damned by Girls. From the album “Album”, we come out of the traps with this little gem by Girls, who aren’t actually girls and aren’t a band anymore either. Nice indie stuff.

2. You talk way too much by the Strokes. From 2003’s – 2003’s!!!! – Room on fire long player.

3. Lying in the Snow by the Bees. Sunshine Hit Me is the album from the mighty Bees, all the way from the Isle of Wight. Come back soon, please.

4. Love The One You’re With by Crosby, Stills and Nash. There is no finer Stephen Stills song.

5. I Saw the Light by Todd Rundgren. The great man plays all the instruments and provides all the voices on this all-time classic from the sublime Something/Anything record. Go buy it!

6. Far from Home by Neil Young. Dear old Neil with a harmonica-laced beauty from Prairie Wind.

7. Mine Smell Like Honey by REM. Late REM from the Collapse Into Now LP, Michael Stipe growling his way through a mediocre filler.

8. I Love The Sound of Breaking Glass by Nick Lowe. One of Britain’s true innovators, Lowe’s Jesus of Cool is essential listening.

9. Splitting the Atom by Massive Attack. Horace Andy and Damon Albarn turn up on this dark plodder (in the nicest possible way) from Heligoland. Wonderful.

10. Growin’ Up by Bruce Springsteen. From the early days, the Greetings from Asbury Park album, the boss was still developing his sound, which became much thicker and fuller as the years went by. Joyous.
