The Friday Music Shuffle (24.6.22)

by Rick Johansen

I didn’t get round to doing a music shuffle when in Greece. There was simply too much lying on a sun bed and swimming in the sea for that, but now I’m back in shite and briny Britain, the fun can resume.

As ever, it’s 10 songs chosen at random by my musical device from my collection, I tell you what they are and if you want to sing along, then just click on the title!

So, without further ado, let’s rock!

  1. Reflecting Light by The Avalanches Feat. Sananda Meitreya and Vashti Bunyan. Sananda is the former Terence Trent D’arby, the Liverpool full back (almost), and it’s gorgeous.
  2. Finally by Fergie. From the Dutchess long player, continuing the football link, Fergie probably isn’t Sir Alex. Some voice though.
  3. Haul Away Joe by Fisherman’s Friends. Great stuff from Port Isaac’s finest.
  4. I’ll Be Around by Daryl Hall and John Oates. Some wonderful blue eyed soul from H&O.
  5. Domestic Bliss by Glass Animals. The band’s Dreamland was one of the best albums of 2020. Here’s an example of why.
  6. Silicone On Sapphire by The Clash. It’s a dub version of Washington Bullets, from Sandinista. Totally, utterly magnificent.
  7. Willin’ by Little Feat. The band’s Waiting For Columbus is one of the best live albums ever made and given that much of it was recorded at the Rainbow Theatre, I was probably there for some of this.
  8. So Why So Sad by The Manic Street Preachers. Let’s go back to 2001 and hear the Manics with a convincing Beach Boys impression. Lovely.
  9. Strange Days by The Doors. Jim Morrison, a complete dick. The Doors, overrated. But they still made some fine records.
  10. In My Room by Albert Hammond Jr. Not the Brian Wilson tune, but one by the Strokes axeman. Excellent.

My desert island disc from the above is the exciting number six selection, Silicone on Sapphire by The Clash.
