The Friday Music Shuffle (23.7.21)

by Rick Johansen

The last day of the British summer – possibly – and it’s time for some music. Ten tunes from my collection, selected at random by my musical device for your delectation.

Why not join in the ‘fun’ and click on the song titles and see what you are or aren’t missing?

Let’s rock!

  1. Wake Up Call by Maroon 5. I rather like Maroon 5. We saw them at the Bristol Beacon, as it wasn’t called a few years ago, and they were superb. This from 2007’s ‘It Won’t Be Soon Before long’.
  2. Sugar by Sufjan Stevens. This is great, from 2020’s The Ascension.
  3. Money For Nothing by Dire Straits. Probably not Mark Knopfler’s finest work, but unquestionably the song that made him a superstar. I hate the 1980s drum sound, mind.
  4. Jimmy, Jimmy by Madonna. No, not a cover of the Undertones classic, but a track from Madge’s True Blue album, when her voice was still a little on the squeaky side!
  5. The Tallest Man, the Broadest Shoulders (Part I: The Great Frontier – Part II: Come to Me Only with Playthings Now) by Sufjan Stevens. Blimey – another song from the great Mr Stevens, this from 2005’s Illinoise.
  6. Consumption by ZZ Top. Top notch rock and roll from the bearded wonders, taken from 2012’s La Futura.
  7. Maybe After He’s Gone by The Zombies. 1968’s Odessey and Oracle is basically the Zombies’ Pet Sounds. Cracking track from said album.
  8. I Ain’t The One by Spoon. Opening track from 2017’s Hot Thoughts. Desperately underrated band.
  9. The Weight by The Band. Back to 1968 again and this is from the great Music From The Big Pink long player.
  10. One Of One by Kamasi Washington. Fantastic modern jazz from 2018’s Heaven And Earth.

That’s all, folks!
