The Friday Music Shuffle (21.8.20)

by Rick Johansen

It looks and feels like the depths of winter, which is probably about right given that August is usually such a grim month weather wise. But whatever the weather, the hits just keep on coming because it’s Friday and it’s the Friday Music Shuffle. Ten tunes selected at random by my musical device. Here goes, let’s rock!

  1. When You Die by MGMT. Some rude words on this gorgeous piece of synth pop from the American chaps on their 2018 long player Little Dark Age.
  2. Belfast to Boston by James Taylor. No prizes for guessing what this song from Taylor’s 2003 album October Road is about: ‘Send no weapons no more money. Send no vengeance across the seas. Just the blessing of forgiveness for my new countryman and me.’
  3. Wonderful by Josh Rouse. Some lovely folk/roots from the American singer-songwriter.
  4. Daydreaming by Radiohead. Staggeringly brilliant from The Moon Shaped Pool album.
  5. Someone Great by LCD Soundsystem. If you don’t think you know this, take a listen and I can assure you that you really do.
  6. Whiplash by Frank Ifield. This is on some bizarre compilation album that I have. It’s the theme from a 1960 TV show called Whiplash (no, I don’t remember it) and obviously so since the Kiwi crooner Mr Ifield sings little other than Whiplash throughout the song. Weird.
  7. Wild Surf by Ash. Absolute top notch rock from the Norn Iron musos.
  8. Brown Skin Girl by Santana ft Bo Bice. Carlos joins forces with a former American Idol star from his All That I Am long player.
  9. Someday Never Comes by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Sound advice from John Fogerty’s classic band.
  10. Amor by Los Amigos Invisibles. Simply magnificent from Venezuela’s finest musical exports. Everyone who loves music should own a cope of Arepa 3000 – a Venezuelan journey into space.

That’s all, folks!
