The Friday Music Shuffle (20.8.21)

by Rick Johansen

It was 81 years ago to the day that Ramon Merçader attacked Leon Trotsky with an ice pick which, the Stranglers informed us, “made his ears burn”. Quite badly, I’d imagine since the old boy died the following day. Anyway, that’s enough of the good news for one day. All my life I’ve suffered for my music, now it’s your turn (N Innes). And it’s time for the weekly shuffle, 10 tunes from my collection, selected at random by my musical device and I tell you what they are. Why not join in the ‘fun’, click on the title and sing along?

Let’s rock!

  1. The Winter and the Summer by The Strawbs. Lush folkie type prog rock from the band’s 1973 LP Bursting At The Seams.
  2. O No Not Again by Lindisfarne. More folk type music from the Geordie legends, this from 1972’s Dingly Dell.
  3. It Doesn’t Matter Anymore by Linda Ronstadt. Paul Anka wrote it, Buddy Holly sang it and owned it and here the divine Ms Ronstadt does a mean cover version.
  4. Wind Parade by Jordan Rakei. Brilliant 2020 cover of the Donald Byrd classic.
  5. Next To You by The Police. Early, frantic Police and that’s far from an insult. Great rock and roll.
  6. Forever and Always by MARO. A class track from Late Night Tales, curated by Jordan Rakei, released in April 2021.
  7. I Luv You Baby by The Original. Classic House dating back to 1994. 1994 FFS.
  8. You Need Love by The Wondermints. The brilliant Mints eventually became part of Brian Wilson’s stellar backing band, but my God they did some great tunes of their own, as well as this Hollies cover.
  9. April’s Song by Real Estate. From their excellent 2014 album Atlas, here we find the boys in typical jangly guitar country on this lovely instrumental.
  10. Bruxellisation by the Electric Soft Parade. One of my favourite bands, this is from the Brighton lads’ 2003 The American Adventure. I can’t believe they never really broke through.

That’s all, folks!
