The Friday Music Shuffle (20.5.22)

by Rick Johansen

Greetings pop-pickers and welcome to my Friday Music Shuffle where my portable listening device chooses 10 songs from my collection and I tell you what they are. And if you want to sing along, then simply click on the title.

So, let’s not tease you anymore. Let’s rock!

  1. Progression by Carasel feat David Boomha. Quality hip hop from back in the day (2012).
  2. Talybont by Gentle Giant. Quite a contrast as we move from hip hop to folky sounding prog monsters Gentle Giant, with a track from 1975’s Free Hand.
  3. Love Unlimited by Fun Lovin’ Criminals. Huey Morgan and the boys with a belter from 1998’s 100% Columbian.
  4. Fame by David Bowie. Very funky Bowie, with added John Lennon, on my favourite of his albums, 1975’s Fame, oddly enough.
  5. Getaway Car by Hall and Oates. 2003 saw H&O release their 16th studio album and very good it was too. Here’s why.
  6. Talking Straight by Rolling Blackouts Coastal Fever. I’m seeing this great Aussie band next week. This cracking rocker is from 2018’s Hope Downs.
  7. Don’t Let Go by Weezer. Marvellous stuff from Rivers Cuomo and his chaps from 2001’s ‘green album’.
  8. Telegraph To The Afterlife by Elton John Vs Pnau. From the incredible Good Morning To The Night record released in 2012, where the cunning Aussies remix lots of Elton tunes to make brand new ones. And it works.
  9. Song Of Life by Leftfield. Some proper chilled electronica from the London duo.
  10. Today Today Today by James Taylor. In 2015, James brought us Before This World, an album that ranks up there with Mud Slide Slim and Sweet Baby James, it’s that great.

And that’s all, folks.

My desert island disc from that lot is Today, Today, Today by Sweet Baby James.
