The Friday Music Shuffle (20.1.23)

by Rick Johansen

Afternoon all. It’s time for the weekly music shuffle where my musical device chooses ten random tunes from my collection and I tell you what it’s chosen. And if you want to sing along, simply click on the song title. So without further ado, let’s rock!

  1. Once In A Blue Moon by Nat King Cole. The boy could play the piano as well as having one of the great singing voices.
  2. Winter’s Day by The High Llamas. Lovely bit of whimsy from the excellent Llamas from 2007’s Can Cladders long player.
  3. Electrolite by R.E.M. Simply magnificent from 1996’s New Adventures In Hi-Fi.
  4. The Second Sitting For The Last Supper by 10cc. 1975’s The Original Soundtrack produced some great songs. This is pretty good too but be warned that Eric Stewart does use the N word.
  5. Jukebox by Talc. An incredible band, a cross between Steely Dan and the Bonzo Dog Doo Dah band, they made two terrific albums, this track coming from Licensed Premises Lifestyle. Buy their records.
  6. Distance Inbetween by The Coral. What a top band they are.
  7. Ego by A Tribe Called Quest. Of course it’s great. RIP Phife.
  8. Vanz Kant Danz by John Fogerty. This is a song about Saul Zaentz (Vanz), president of Fantasy Records, who ripped Fogerty off. “Vanz can’t dance, but he’ll steal your money. Watch him or he’ll rob you blind.”
  9. Walk Upon The Water by The Move. The B side of 1968’s wonderful Fire Brigade. Love the way Roy Wood sings the chorus and middle eight. The man is a genius.
  10. Interlude No 2 by Warren Zevon. A short, highly unusual instrumental from 1980’s Bad Luck Streak In Dancing School.

So close this week for my Desert island Disc for this week. In the end, I went for the exciting number three choice Electrolite by R.E.M.
