Hello. We join you on the second day of the meteorological autumn, or winter as I prefer to call it. As the nights close in and the temperatures sink back to normal, all I can offer you is the Friday Music shuffle where my music machine chooses ten random tunes from my collection and I tell you what it’s chosen. And if you feel like so doing, why not click on the track and sing along?
Let’s rock!
- Prisoner by Ryan Adams. Title track from Ryan’s 2017 long player, a return to top form.
- Belles of Paris by The Beach Boys. Amiable tune from 1978’s very patchy (to say the least) MIU album. Mike Love’s French takes some beating, if only for comedy value.
- Someone’s Gotta Change Your Mind by Lindsey Buckingham. From the 2006 LP, Under The Skin everything but the drums and percussion is played by Buckingham. Mick Fleetwood does those bits.
- Sweeter Memories by Todd Rundgren. All instruments played and vocals sung by the great man from his stellar Something/Anything album of 1972.
- Both Sides Now by Glen Campbell. Backed by the legendary Wrecking Crew, this Joni Mitchell cover is from Campbell’s 1970 LP Try A Little Kindness. Amen to that.
- The Sad Café by The Eagles. A song about the Troubadour club in LA from the band’s 1979 album The Long Run. The Eagles had long passed their peak by now, but this is one of the better tracks.
- Gorilla, You’re A Desperado by Warren Zevon. Back we go to 1980 and Zevon’s superb Bad Luck In Dancing School album and featuring most of The Eagles. Brilliant.
- In A Parade by Paul Simon. Great track from Simon’s outstanding 2016 Stranger To Stranger record.
- Dancing Machine by The Jackson 5. Latter day (1973) Motown and it’s pretty well filler from one of my Motown Chartbusters albums.
- Sarah’s Flame by The Drive-By Truckers. Great track from the band’s 2020 long player The New OK.
Tough call for this week’s Desert Island Disc. I’m going for the exciting number 10 song Sarah’s Flame by the Drive-By Truckers who are arguably the best band that most people don’t know.
That’s all, folks.
