The Friday Music Shuffle (19.2.21)

by Rick Johansen

It’s a dull, overcast day here in the village so let’s play some sunshiny, or not, music. 10 tunes played by my musical device at random and I’ll tell you what they are. If you want to play along, just click on the title.

  1. Mine Smell Like Honey by REM. I’m not sure mine do, but of course an excellent tune from their final album Collapse Into Now.
  2. Birthday Morning by the Association. Some lush harmonies from 1968’s Birthday album.
  3. Up Up & Away by the Fifth Dimension. Amazingly, a Jimmy ‘Wichita Lineman’ tune. Great stuff although I prefer the Johnny Mann Singers version.
  4. Also A But by Real Estate. Some lovely alternative/indie music from the New York boys, taken from 2020s The Main Thing.
  5. Las Gorditas De Mario by Los Amigos Invisibles. Venezuela’s finest from their 2002 LP The Venezuelan Zinga Son, Vol. 1.
  6. Reason To Believe by Glen Campbell. The sheer beauty of Campbell’s voice is at its best in this cover of the Tim Harding classic.
  7. Too Many Nights Too Long by Poco. From their 1976 album Rose of Cimarron, a rather lovely song sung by future Eagles man Timothy B Schmit.
  8. Beat A Drum by REM. Another welcome appearance from the boys, this time from 2001’s Reveal. Gorgeous.
  9. Pandora’s Box by Procul Harum. If you thought the Harum were simply about A Whiter Shade of Pale, you were wrong. And Gary Brooker is still some singer.
  10. Every Day Is Yours To Win by REM. The third track by the same artist in one shuffle – has that ever happened before? No – and it’s REM again from Collapse Into Now, again. I miss them so much.

That’s all, folks!
