The Friday Music Shuffle (14.11.25)

Flood alert special

by Rick Johansen

Hi pop-pickers and welcome to another fun-packed music shuffle.

Ten more songs chosen at random from my collection by my music device and I tell you, my loyal reader, what it’s chosen. Please do click on the title and listen along with me.

Here’s hoping you find something you like!

  1. Why Not? by Gentle Giant. Classic prog from the band’s 1970 long player, Gentle Giant.
  2. Flyin’ High by ZZ Top. Back we go to 2012 and typical Top rock from the La Futura record.
  3. Hippy Hippy Shake by The Georgia Satellites. If you thought all this band did was Battleship Chains, I don’t think you’d be far out, but this is decent enough cover of the Swinging Blue Jeans’ classic.
  4. Grow by Terry Hall and Mushtaq. 2003’s The Hour Of Two Lights is my favourite Terry Hall record bar none, even including The Specials music, which somewhat passed me by. Great stuff.
  5. HappyDaysToytown by The Small Faces. Superb stuff from their finest album, 1968’s Ogdens’ Nut Gone Flake.
  6. Street Guru Part 2 by Niti Sawhney. Short but beautiful from his great 2001 album Prophesy.
  7. Crying Lightning by the Arctic Monkeys. Like everything else they do, it’s great. This from 2009’s Humbug.
  8. Sail Away by Creedence Clearwater Revival. Filler, I’m afraid, from 1972’s Mardi Gras album, with the band running out of gas.
  9. Headlights by Alex G. Title track of his brilliant album of the same name, released in 2025. It’s his tenth record, but I’d never heard of him until now.
  10. First Regret / 3 Years Older by Steven Wilson. Over 12 minutes of classic prog from his superb 2015 album Hand Cannot Erase.

Not an obvious standout for this week’s Desert Island Discs but I’ll go for Crying Lightning by the Arctic Monkeys.

That was fun! Have a good week till next week.
