The Friday Music Shuffle (12/11/21)

by Rick Johansen

Hi pop pickers and welcome to the Friday Music Shuffle. Here, my musical device selects 10 random tunes from my collection and I tell you what they are. The real fun begins when you click on the song title, as I know millions of you do (is this correct? – ed), and sing along.

So, without further ado, let’s rock!

  1. Calling Dr Love by Kiss. Off we go then, with a Kiss rocker from 1976.
  2. How Does That Grab You, Darlin’ by Nancy Sinatra. Bearing more than a slight resemblance to These Boots Are Made For Walking (it’s almost the same song), I still love it.
  3. Whiskey Bottle by Bad Company. The B side of the band’s 1975 Good Lovin’ Gone Bad hit single, this of course confirms Paul Rodgers as arguably the greatest rock singer of them all.
  4. The Stranger by Christine and the Queens. Absolutely fantastic. Great song, great singer. It’s from her 2018 album Chris. Buy this record.
  5. Byzantine 2 by Xaos. Admittedly, this is an acquired taste which I acquired back in 2015. The album, all about modern Greece, is incredible.
  6. When You’re Smiling And Astride me by Father John Misty. What a title for a song! I Love You, Honeybear was one of 2015’s finest albums. Fun fact: Father John’s real name is Josh Tillman.
  7. You Are The Flower by Toto. A track from their first long player, Toto, released in 1978.
  8. What Happened Yesterday by Neil Young. 46 seconds of magic from 1995’s Mirrorball.
  9. When Walter Went Crazy by Drive-By Truckers. Fantastic southern rock from 2014’s English Oceans. Forget Kings of Leon’s faux nonsense and stick to the real thing, singing about ‘yellow piss in the snow’. Marvellous.
  10. Secret Love by The Bee Gees. I love the Bee Gees and don’t care who knows! This, from 1991, is wonderful.

That’s all, folks!
