The Friday Music Shuffle (11.11.22)

by Rick Johansen

As Monty Don always says at the start of Gardeners World, hello.

It’s time, yet again, for the Friday Music Shuffle in which my music device selects 10 random songs from my collection and I tell you what they are. If you want to hear the song and even sing along, then just click on the title.

So, without further ado, let’s rock!

  1. Crazy Crazy Nights by Kiss. From their very short album, The Best Of Kiss (one song), here’s an absolute classic.
  2. Friend by Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs. Lush track from 2022’s When The Lights Go, one of the best albums of the year.
  3. Mare, Take Me Home by Matthews’ Southern Comfort. Now we go back to the previous century for some gorgeous harmonies from the band who covered Woodstock so beautifully.
  4. Bewilderbeast by Badly Drawn Boy. From Damon Gough’s first album back in 2000 called The House of Bewilderbeast. It’s an instrumental, mind. Lovely.
  5. Chestnut Mare by The Byrds. Back to 1970 for this classic. That’s two horse songs so far…
  6. Don’t Look Back by Teenage Fanclub. Incredibly, we go back to this 1995 belter from the excellent Grand Prix long player.
  7. Fences by Phoenix. One of my very favourite bands, this track is from Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix, one of the best albums of 2009.
  8. Susie Q by Creedence Clearwater Revival. The first Creedence hit record in 1968 is a cover of Dale Hawkins 1957 rockabilly tune. Sheer greatness.
  9. I Love The Sound Of Breaking Glass by Nick Lowe. Classic from Lowe’s career high, 1978’s Jesus Of Cool. You need this album.
  10. Myth of Sisyphus by Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. Can’t find the CSNY version so here’s Stephen Stills’ original from 1975’s Stills.

A very tough call for this week’s Desert Island Disc, but after careful consideration I’ve chosen the exciting number five song Chestnut Mare by The Byrds.

Hope you enjoyed it. That’s all, folks!
