That Friday Music Shuffle (31.5.19)

by Rick Johansen

TF it’s Friday and I don’t mean Thank Four. I realise that this much-loved (?) part of my blog is family friendly, apart from the music that is and I should keep things clean. So I am going to.

Anyway, enough waffle. Every Friday, I take to my Man Cave and set my musical device free and allow it to choose some music at random from my collection. I call it the Friday Music Shuffle. I hope you enjoy it, although quite how you can enjoy reading a list of ten random songs is beyond me.

Welcome back my friends to the show that never ends.

  1. Sky Trails by David Crosby. Title track of Croz’s 2017 album sees the CSNY veteran on tip-top form.
  2. Jesus In 3/4 Time by J D Souther. Long time Eagles collaborator on a 1972 tune featuring Glenn Frey on backing vocals.
  3. Weather In My Head by Donald Fagen. From the Steely Dan man’s 2012 record Sunken Condos, here’s a catchy, bluesy tune that sounds a bit like the Dan’s earlier Daddy Don’t Live In That New York City No More. Great guitar from Fagen regular Jon Herington.
  4. Human Touch by Rock Springfield. I remember this tune being better than I think it is today. I mean, it’s good, just not great.
  5. Live It up by Crosby, Stills and Nash. Cracking title song of CSN’s album of the same name, written by the genius that is Joe Vitale.
  6. Over Under Sideways Down by the Yardbirds. 2m:24s minutes of bliss from the band’s 1966 long player Roger the Engineer, featuring the guitar work of one Jeff Beck.
  7. From Here On Out by the Killers. The amazing pipes of Brandon Flowers in this tune from Battle Born.
  8. Existing by the Electric Soft Parade. Absolutely brilliant from the Brighton boys. From their album The American Adventure.
  9. I Can’t See Nobody by the Bee Gees. From their ‘live’ One Night Only record, this features the nasal, strangulated vocals of brother Robin. Good tune, though, which improves when brother Barry joins in.
  10. Madman Across The Water by Elton John. Title track of Elton’s finest album by absolutely miles. Even his bonkers American accent can’t spoil this one.

That’s all, folks.
