That Friday Music Shuffle (28.6.19)

by Rick Johansen

Back home, as the England football team sang in 1970, and pretty knackered after a long and slow drive back from Manchester after a shorter flight from Split to Manchester. Those matchsticks might be required to keep my eyes open later on but until then I am going to engage in my regular Friday pastime of allowing my mobile phone device to play a random shuffle of music. Then, for no obvious reason, I shall tell you about it.

So here goes. Ten tunes from my collection. Hope you enjoy it. Let’s rock.

  1. Fortunate Son by John Fogerty. From his brilliant 1997 ‘live’ album, Premonition, the Creedence man is on top form here, ably backed by the great Kenny Aronoff on drums.
  2. Run to the Sun by N*E*R*D. Top notch funky R&B by the top notch funky R&B outfit.
  3. May I Be The Light by LUMP. Absolutely gorgeous tune from their 2018 album LUMP. Laura Marling has seldom sounded better.
  4. Shout by Lulu and the Luvvers. The most well known version of the Isley Brothers tune from…gulp…1959. Lulu was 16 when she recorded this some five years later.
  5. So Many Ways by Carole King. Lovely tune from her Wrap Around Joy LP.
  6. All I Want by the Lightning Seeds. Lush tune from the loveable Scousers.
  7. Time Out by Joe Walsh. Cracking rocker from our Joe from his So What album.
  8. Stan (Live) by Eminem feat. Elton John. Really, a half-decent collaboration between Marshall and Reg, the latter of whom’s voice is more rough and soulful in old age.
  9. Slip Slidin’ Away by Paul Simon. Two little known facts here. 1. The only Paul Simon album this appeared on was Greatest Hits etc. 2. The great Steve Gadd plays drums. (Check out his, kids.)
  10. All Or Nothing At All by Frank Sinatra. No apologies for this beauty, recorded by Francis Albert in…er…1939.
