That Friday Music Shuffle (15.1.21)

by Rick Johansen

In the bleak midwinter, deep in my Man Cave, it’s that time of the week when my music machine plays ten tunes at random and I tell you what they are. And if you fancy listening along, just click on the song title and you can.

So, without further ado, let’s rock!

  1. Heat Waves by Glass Animals. Nice opener from their 2020 album Dreamland, one of the best albums of the year.
  2. Dear Mr Fantasy by Crosby, Stills and Nash. Excellent cover of the Traffic classic. Stills does most of the heavy lifting.
  3. Soul Searchin’ by Brian Wilson feat Carl Wilson. One of the few undiscovered Brian Wilson gems, which finally appeared on his patchy Gettin’ In Over My Head album. Made so much better with late brother Carl’s lead vocal. One of the great key changes near the end.
  4. Can You Dig It? by The Mock Turtles. One of my favourite tunes by anyone, ever. And it’s 30 years old.
  5. Live and Let Die by Billy Joel. An excellent, if a little too faithful, cover of Macca’s Bond theme tune, from the covers album The Art of McCartney.
  6. Apparently Nothing by Young Disciples. Quite brilliant funky acid jazz from 1991.
  7. Happy Together by the Turtles. I suppose there were three main harmony bands I loved in the 1960s. The Beach Boys, The Association and The Turtles. Mint.
  8. The Start by The Bees. Lovely stuff from the Isle of Wight’s desperately underrated Bees. Never understand why they never really made it.
  9. Hard by Carasel feat One Soul. Old skool hip hop from 2012 and it’s great.
  10. Express Yourself by Madonna. From 1989’s Like A Prayer long player. Love her.

That’s all, folks!
