“You should watch This Morning,” I was told by someone who didn’t know any better. “Holly Willoughby and Phillip Schofield are hilarious.” They proceeded to tell me just what jolly japes Holly and Phil had been up to. It sounded as much fun as a burning orphanage. “They can’t stop laughing.” Having been all but forced to watch brief parts of the show during work, I couldn’t start laughing. But, I suppose, it takes all sorts.
I have just read a tweet leading to a link which detailed this morning’s main discussion and I have to say I was a little shocked that a popular morning show should be so sophisticated. The big question was: “Should you wear pants under your pyjamas?”
Not for This Morning a debate on climate change or the alarming rise in Covid infections. No. It was, apparently, more serious than that.
From what I can tell – I did not research too deeply – Holly and Phil had a star-studded panel to debate this important issue. None other than knitwear enthusiast Gyles Brandreth and LBC shock jock Nick Ferrari led what I must assume was a national debate, with a phone in to boot. That must have been TV gold.
The question of whether people should wear pants beneath their pyjamas is a stupid as wearing pants under one’s pyjamas in the first place. In fact, I am, puzzled as to why one would actually get dressed to go to bed but these are, it seems, the issues Britons care about. Which does make me wonder if we are all going to hell in a handcart.
I know nothing of young Holly, other than that she is a ‘presenter’ of TV shows which seems to be a more sought after role than one in which you actually do something like sing or dance or act, although I am more familiar with Phil who co-starred with a puppet called Gordon T Gopher in an BBC continuity show called The Broom Cupboard (I’m not, actually. I read it on wikipedia.) Anyway, big stars on the crystal bucket, as Clive James once described television.
Still, if this is grown-up TV, I dread to think what children’s programmes look like. Bananas in pyjamas, anyone?
