When all seems lost, I seek out music. Old music, not so old music and, preferably, new music. Surprisingly, Covid didn’t hamper the quality of new music being released, just the quantity. 2022 looks set to put that right and how.
This year, in no particular order, we have:
- Time Skiffs by Animal Collective. Someone once described them as Kraftwerk meets the Beach Boys. This is what they do, the very wonderful My Girls from 2009. If the new one comes close to this standard, I’ll be very happy.
- Once Twice Melody by Beach House. A band whose name always makes me think about where I want to be when I hear it. If New Romance is anything to go by, it’s going to be great.
- Chloe and the Next 20th Century by Father John Misty. Can’t wait for Josh Tillman’s new record. Here’s Funny Girl.
- Forever by Phife Dawg. Tragically, A Tribe Called Quest’s Phife died in 2016. This is a posthumous release, obvs. French Kiss Trois is encouraging (me to buy it).
- The Tipping Point by Tears For Fears. Yep, seriously. On my bucket list to see live.
- For The Sake of Bethel Woods by Midlake. This is Meanwhile.
Then, there are albums by Weezer, Metronomy, Spoon, Khruangbin with Leon Bridges, Confidence Man, Arctic Monkeys and – wishfully thinking – maybe a Donald Fagen album, too.
Happy days for new music in 2022.
