More horrors from Ukraine

by Rick Johansen

If you have a strong stomach – and I mean a STRONG stomach – then check out the twitter account of Mariana Betsa, the Ukrainian ambassador to Estonia and specifically her tweet at 14.05 today. I am not going to link because it is so upsetting, yet everyone should see the tweet, and the accompanying photographs in order to see what is really going on in Ukraine. These are Ms Betsa’s words:

Russian invaders killed families. First foto – Bucha. They burned the bodies. Second foto – Mykolayiv. A 3-year old Arina (with signs of rape) on top of her 17-years old sister Veronica.

Get your head round that. It is bad enough to read the descriptions of these photos. To see them – well, I’m deeply shocked. The words alone: ‘3-year old Arina (with signs of rape) on top of her 17-years old sister Veronica.’ The second photograph is pixilated, which is the correct and responsible thing to have done. But what sort of man interferes with a three-year old child? Whoever did it is, need I add, the lowest form of life.

I saw the tweet and photos just after I read that President Putin has warmly congratulated his friend and ally Viktor Orban for his landslide victory in the Hungarian elections. Yesterday, I read the lesser talented Hitchens – Peter – in the Mail on Sunday: ‘This is not a war between Ukraine and Russia. It is a war between the USA and Russia, in which both sides are cynically using Ukraine as a battering ram.’  Of course, it is neither: Ukraine is defending itself from the fascist invader. And there is never any serious condemnation from the hard left like George Galloway and Jeremy Corbyn’s mates in Stop the War and the hard right, with Nigel Farage’s Vote Leave EU Putin’s apologists and useful idiots. Meanwhile, a three year old girl has been raped and murdered. What is it with some people?

I wrote in yesterday’s blog that the time has come for the west to call Putin’s bluff. If he is threatening to let loose a barrage of nuclear missiles, then we must remind him that we are not going to stand by and do nothing when his soldiers are committing mass murder. If the photos in Ms Betsa’s tweet doesn’t convince us to kick Putin back to Russia, nothing will.
