It’s all downhill from Friday onwards

by Rick Johansen

I’d like to think that after Boris Johnson’s horrible right wing government wins tomorrow’s general election, we can get on with normal life. I can’t sleep properly because I’m full of anxiety which means I’m tired. Which makes me more anxious. And tired. I’d like to think we can get on with normal life but that’s not going to happen. Friday 13th December will merely be another step along the shitshow Britain has become.

In an ideal world, I’d wake up to a bright new day like in 1997 when Tony Blair marched triumphantly into Downing Street. He made things better, much better. I’d be happy enough if we could go back to 2010 and elect the right Miliband – David – as Labour leader and not the decent enough but not good enough Ed. I could even live with 2012 before the full effects of David Cameron’s austerity heavy government were upon us. At least we had a black woman as the face of the Olympics and a Somali migrant was a national hero. Now, all that’s left is hate, anger and division. And we can’t make it go away.

Johnson’s Tory party have had nothing to say except ‘get Brexit done’. His spin meister Dominic Cummings, the man who gave us ‘take back control’ back in 2016, has told every single Tory that they must say ‘get Brexit done’ in every single speech, preferably as part of every sentence. It’s a lie – of course it is: Johnson doesn’t do truth – but a weary electorate wishes, if not believes, Brexit will be done by Friday. When and if Johnson wins, Brexit and its deadly consequences will drag on for years, perhaps decades, as the country slowly but surely declines. There will be endless prattle about trade deals or the lack of them. The destruction of what is left of manufacturing. With 14 million people in poverty, social cohesion will break down. Johnson’s extra coppers will, I suspect be required as Thatcher’s were to deal with the consequences of social breakdown. This, I fear, will be the inevitable result of the election of Johnson.

I am almost as angry about the so called Labour opposition as I am about Johnson’s Tories. A half-decent Labour leader with a front bench of all the talents, which means none of the buffoons Corbyn has appointed, like Abbott, Burgon, Butler, Long Bailey et al, would march into power at a canter. Their breathtaking incompetence has enabled Johnson to snatch the greatest prize in politics, the chance to run the country for the next five years, and surely run it into the ground.

If things could only get better under New Labour, they can only get worse – much worse – under Johnson. You won’t enjoy the ride because it’s all downhill from now on.
