I have heard greatness

by Rick Johansen

Sometimes, you hear a song for the first time and you know, instantly, that it’s classic. A song that last in your memory forever, a song that you will sing forever and one that will end up on your Desert Island Discs, in all likelihood as the most indispensable song of them all. Avi Buffalo’s Skeleton Painting is one of these songs.

I first heard it on BBC 6 Music’s excellent Radcliffe and Maconie show and could barely believe what I was listening to. It was a stunning blend of progressive rock and orchestral music, lasting six and a half of the shortest minutes in music history.

Avi Buffalo is actually Avigdor Benyamin Zahner-Isenberg, so I can see why he chose the shorter, catchier name. It’s certainly much easier to remember. I had never heard of him until a few weeks ago and now I am utterly besotted.

I am horrified to learn that Avi toured the UK last year before I had even heard of him, but when he announces his next dates, I shall be there, pretty well wherever it is in our grey and sometimes unpleasant land.

I have heard greatness, I have spent 99p to own it and now I want more from Avi Buffalo. I’m in love. When you hear it, you might be, too.
