The old adage that there is one born every day is confirmed, yet again, with the latest You Gov poll which reveals that half of those who voted to leave the EU would not be willing to lose any money at all as a consequence of Britain’s withdrawal. Not half a dozen, not half a percentage point but half of those who voted to leave the EU. All I can say is this: hello?
I know opinion polls can be wrong, but not to this extent. What on earth were they thinking about? I have nothing but dripping contempt for the official remain campaign, led by David Cameron, which was nothing more than project fear. A rubbish, negative campaign versus Project hate, led by the leavers’ hero Nigel Farage. We all know that hate won in the end, but what a choice. But surely all of us knew, didn’t we, that leaving the EU would not come without cost. In fact, the basket case right have said all along that the economic price for leaving the EU is a price worth paying. That it would be worth the country taking a financial hit so long as those pesky immigrants could be stopped from coming here. Seriously – I never detected with the leavers a sense that the economy was more important than immigration. Now I am hearing that half of them don’t want to be worse off. Theresa May has got some very bad news for you.
I say some of you because, as ever, the affluent and relatively affluent, will barely notice the financial hit, certainly not as the worse off. The well-educated will do all right as well. When the jobs start to disappear, the usual suspects, May’s “ordinary working people” will be the ones who suffer most. When inflation rises, guess who suffers most? But you knew this, didn’t you?
I care about the effects of leaving the EU because I care about our country, its stability, its wealth, its opportunities and I care about everyone who, I believe, deserves a chance equal to the rich and privileged, particularly those with unearned wealth. Like many people of a certain age, leaving the EU will not affect me much, but it is laughable, always was, to suggest that many people will end up being a lot worse off when we leave.
Why is ANYONE surprised there will be a price to be paid for leaving the EU and it will be paid, mainly, by those who voted to leave?
