Fear and loathing in London

by Rick Johansen

Have you seen the video of the Donald Trump supporter being roundly abused by a mob of crazy ‘protesters’, led by a woman, her eyes filled with hate and loathing, her mouth pouring out foul-mouthed filth, who laughs like a lunatic when the man is ‘milkshaked’? Take my word for it; the whole thing is disgusting. This, I fear, is the future of Britain.

One day it’s Stephen Yaxley Lennon and his fascist thugs on the march, the next it’s the far left rent-a-mob, matching anything Yaxley Lennon can manage. That is not a compliment.

Everything about the incident was so wrong, totally fucked up. No, it was worse than that. These were people – this time, it appeared from the completely unhinged far left – who operated not by rules, but by mob rule.

This ugly, hate-filled incident surely reflected what we can all see in politics, not just here but abroad. The centre ground of politics no longer exists. On a day when the shiny, new political party Change UK became terminally ill, the extremes are closer to ruling the world.

The far right, alt right, whatever right you want to call them, are in the ascendance. Trump in America, Brexit over here; Italy, France and Hungary face the same threats. And what is our response, back at home?

With the centre ground empty, it’s the hard left, ultra left, the far left. Her majesty’s opposition leader is an elderly Marxist, the people around him are either Stalinists or from the 57 varieties of Trotskyism. Those who were abusing the Trump supporter will have come from a place even further to the left.

Political discourse has all but faded away. Whilst Trump entertains loonies and fruitcakes, Jeremy Corbyn represents them with another of his terrible speeches at his favourite setting: a protest meeting. The country drifts aimlessly along, with a lame duck prime minister with days left in office. We would be in uncharted waters, if we hadn’t been in them before.

In Britain, anti-Semitism is rife and this time it is coming from the far left, although the far right’s Jew hatred is never far away. Journalists are routinely accused of fake news by the truth police of the extremes on both sides. And our own Brexit is led by out there English nationalists. As of this moment in town, the jigsaw is not complete, but the component pieces are just waiting to fall into place.

Today, the video described earlier scared the hell out of me. The sheer hatred was like nothing I had seen before. It felt and looked insane until your realised that the entire maniacal crowd was in on it.

How does this end? Peacefully, one hopes. Yet what would it take for our green and pleasant land to descend into the madness of fascism and communism? One relatively small fracas does not a world war make. But we are on a very slippery slope.

Donald Trump has poured fuel on the fire we created when we voted to leave Europe. The crazed lunatics of the far left responded to hate with hate. This was a small incident in the bigger picture. However, unless we get a grip, this could end very badly for us. The hate on the mad woman’s face said it all for me.
