B.1.1.529 WEDNESDAY 15TH DECEMBER 2021

by Rick Johansen

No surprise that yet another friend of Boris Johnson, this time the former London mayoral candidate Shaun Bailey, has been revealed to have partied last Christmas when the rest of us were locked down, chained to our armchairs and force-fed beef dripping sandwiches, talking to our hospitalised relatives in hospital via Zoom. The sheer brass neck of these awful establishment toads who are basically laughing at us. Maybe this will fuck up Bailey’s hopes of a peerage from his partner in crime Johnson, but if past form is anything to go by it will probably enhance his chances.

It will certainly do little to unite our divided and broken country at such a difficult time and, for once, the House of Commons was broadly in line with public opinion, which is all over the place at the moment. Something like 100 Tory MPs, along with a few hard left Labour MPs, as well as the independent MP Jeremy Corbyn, voted against some of the government’s new rules on masks and jabs. Even in my own home, views differ as to what should and what should not be done and I occasionally find myself arguing with myself and ignoring the rules I support.

I don’t care too much if I am asked to wear a mask in shops and buses but not everyone agrees with that. I’m not going to the cinema if I have to wear a mask throughout the film and in the unlikely event I have to travel a long distance in the UK, then I’ll drive, maskless, rather than masked-up on a train, not that I could afford to take a long train journey in the UK without selling a kidney.

So we know the direction of travel, at least for today. Omicron will quickly become the official Covid variant, infection numbers will go through the roof and life will go on as before until Boris Johnson reacts far too late, quite possibly during the Queen’s Christmas address, hospitals will be overwhelmed and…oh, just stop it. I just think this stuff, I don’t know it. And thinking has never been my strong point.
