No one would look at this blog and say, “This is written by a man with a brain the size of Canada, a towering intellectual who understands the meaning of life” so when I say that I think I have a possible solution to the havoc wreaked by Covid-19, I doubt many folk will take it too seriously but here it is anyway. And my solution is simple: get your vaccination.

Hardly an original solution, is it? Even Boris The Liar  has been frantically urging people to get their jab because the triple-jabbed are more likely to suffer with only mild, or even symptomless, Covid than those who have not been jabbed at all. Now this sounds all very straightforward simply because it is very straightforward. Those who have been boosted are unlikely to require hospitalisation. It’s becoming very clear that the majority of those filling up hospital ICUs are the unvaccinated. And here we get to the heart of the matter.

Something like a tenth of the population are unvaccinated and if a substantial number of these people catch the virus, there is a significant chance they will end up in hospital. And at a time when the NHS is already running at full capacity because of the usual winter ailments, it is the unvaccinated who are likely to contribute majorly to the NHS being overrun. Resources will be thrown at people who made a personal choice to not take a vaccine are making life very hard for the majority of us who have taken it.

So as the number of Omicron cases goes through the roof, even those with mild or symptomless Covid have to isolate because the NHS could be overrun by the unvaccinated who get very ill. In other words, those who are responsible by taking the vaccine to protect themselves and others are penalised by the actions of the refuseniks. As we will surely find out in the next few days, life for most of us will stop again, probably from 27th December.

The arguments about freedom are getting blurred. We take vaccines because we don’t want to die and we want life to get back to some kind of normal, yet because of those who declare they want to be free to not have a vaccine some kind of normal is not possible.

The main focus should be on getting everyone vaccinated. We are not a country which demands people take vaccines but if people refuse there are consequences for all of us. So rather than restrictions applying to the vaccinated, should they not apply to the non or anti-vaxxed?

To all intents and purposes, vaccine passports already apply for many large events. Why should they not apply across the board, making being vaccinated a condition to do certain things, even like going to the pub? A case could be made for those who cannot or will not be vaccinated to have privately paid for PCR tests before they can go to events or even in some cases work. Because, I repeat, those who do the right thing are currently penalised for doing so.

You can’t withdraw NHS care from the unvaccinated, or even charge them for treatment because there lies a slippery slope, but I would argue the negative consequences should normally apply to those who ignore scientists and doctors, including those who put our NHS at risk by their irresponsibility.

The country is in a terrible mess with Omicron, a mess caused by the prime minister’s dithering and poor leadership and, increasingly, the actions of a minority who are starting to clog up our hospitals.

If are ever going to get back to normal, we need to live a virus which will probably never go away. Many of us have spent our lives struggling into work with dreadful colds and viruses and that could be how we deal with Covid in the future, backed by new treatments and drugs. But first we need to ensure people follow the science and do the right thing. If those who refuse to follow the science, it must surely follow that they are the ones who have to suffer the consequences and not the vast majority who currently do.
